The Prime Minister has extended the furlough scheme to pay 80% of wages while England goes into a second lockdown from Thursday to 2 December.
Boris Johnson said “there is no alternative” and the measures are needed to avoid several thousand deaths per day.
He brushed off criticism that he was too slow to follow the scientific advice and should have implemented a lockdown sooner.
